A short history of how Codex and GPT models evolved


🕹� The Early Days 

• 2018 – GPT-1 → The first "Generative Pretrained Transformer." About 117M parameters. Proof of concept that AI could write coherent text. 
  
• 2019 – GPT-2 → Much larger (1.5B). Famous for being "too dangerous" to release at first. Showed real creative writing potential. 
  
• 2020 – GPT-3 → Huge leap (175B). First widely used for AI text generation. Early APIs let people experiment with essays, chatbots, and more. 
  

💻 Codex Era 

• 2021 – Codex → A special spin-off of GPT-3, fine-tuned on public GitHub code. 
  
• Could understand natural language and turn it into working code. 
• Powered GitHub Copilot, giving coders autocomplete and AI pair programming. 
  

🌐 GPT-4 (2023) 

• No longer just text — added multimodal abilities (text + images). 
• Smarter, more accurate, better reasoning than GPT-3. 
• Included Codex skills natively, so no separate "coding agent" was needed anymore. 

🚀 GPT-5 (Today) 

• Unified model: text, code, and images all in one. 
• Stronger reasoning and creativity than ever before. 
• Carries Codex's DNA, but evolved far beyond it. 
• This is the version you're chatting with now 😉 

Big takeaway: Codex was the "coder cousin" of GPT-3, but its legacy lives on in GPT-4 and GPT-5 as part of a single, powerful model.

Kind of feels like these AI models are the modern version of Horadric Tomes 📜 — full of hidden knowledge, runes, and secrets that keep evolving with each generation. Makes me wonder: if Codex was a rune word, which one would it be?

Some fun ideas: 

• Codex → Insight (Ral Tir Tal Sol), Lore (Ort Sol), Memory (Lum Io Sol Eth) 
  
• GPT-4 / GPT-5 → Infinity (Ber Mal Ber Ist), Enigma (Jah Ith Ber), or even a mythical Oracle rune word.
